A Police Action, a book written by A. A. Freda tells the story of the love affair and adventures a soldier named James Coppi at work. He met and fell in love with a lady called Samantha a few months before he left with a troop of soldiers to fight a war in Vietnam. However, he was confused and was scared of making promises to her which he may not keep. Luckily for him, he came out of the war alive and although he ran from his fears, they later caught up with him when Samantha searched for him and convinced him to make a lifelong commitment to her. The joys and personal struggle for survival by military men, who are saddled with the responsibility of defending their country and sometimes, the good citizens of another nation, is also a major part of the theme.

I enjoyed reading about Coppi and his antics at the barracks. He was just a bag of fun and he helped to keep the spirits of his friends alive even in the face of imminent danger. I loved the fact that he didn’t allow his personality to be suppressed by the laws of the profession, but always spoke the truth and stood by his friends even in grave conditions. I was able to relate well with many of the characters in the story, especially the soldiers. I understood the pains they felt whenever they lost a good colleague in battle. This is not just because I work with the military, but because the settings were very real.

However, I think that using the past tense to tell a story in a book, excluding direct speeches is usually better than using the present tense. Many times while reading the book, I felt that there was something wrong with some sentences, although they were grammatically correct.

I would rate the book three out of four stars. The author did a great job and the plot was balanced. It contained the right amount of suspense, fun, sorrow, romance, etc. However, I think that the author’s expression of her thoughts was not so fluent.

I learned some important lessons from the book and I would be interested in reading another book by the author if I come across any. The book will be interesting for people who like to read romance novels. It would also be liked by people who like to read about wars. However, I think people who do not enjoy reading romance novels will not like the book.
