Review by chigz -- A Police Action by A. A. Freda
A.A. Frebda's novel A Police Action is an action-packed novel that narrates the story of James Coppi, a foxy young man who had luck on his side all the time. While on training in Colorado, Coppi happens upon Samantha in a bar and they instantly hit it off. Both Samantha and James are very young but this does not stop them from falling in love and moving in together. James, though, takes his time to admit that he has fallen in love with Sam, probably due to his fear of not coming back from the Vietnam war alive.
When James is finally shipped off to Vietnam they continue to communicate with each other, with occasional squabbles. As time moves on, their relationship strengthens as long-distance reviews to each of them how much they miss each other. Though their love is just in its infancy, when their torn-apart they are both forced to make paradigm shift in the way they view themselves, each other, and most of all their relationship. Distance and war, rather than torn them apart, actually brings them closer together.
Each chapter has a heading, giving the reader a heads up on what to expect in the chapter. The plot is captivating as it starts off at a fast pace. One will never get bored while reading this book, time flies by without knowing it. Fredda's style of writing makes it appear as if the events are unfolding in real time. This makes it easier for the reader to move along with the event and not to get lost in the plot. To further ease the reading, the plot only revolves around the two main characters, that is Samantha and James. This makes the novel interesting as we are told both sides of the story and left to draw our own conclusions.
The novel has its own share of swearing but, considering the fact that the plot is army based, one comes to appreciate that the vocabulary comes with territory and that it is within context. However, one can't help but notice that Cappi's luck is somehow over-emphasized. We, as the readers, would like our heroes to, sometimes, get into tragic situations and get out of them through hard work and sweat. This makes us see our heroes as being also human like us and we are given the courage to face our own fears. Contrary to this, Cappi's character always gets into trouble, which is not a problem, but he almost manages to get to solve the problems without even breaking a sweat. Everything goes according to his plan at all times, sometimes even without him even lifting a finger. This characterization can only be attributed to super heroes, and even they sometimes fall to their enemies. Cappi's character makes it hard for the reader to identify with him because he seems larger than life.
I rate this novel 3 out of 4 mainly due to the author's characterization of Cappi. Though I admire the originality of the plot, I'm however, a little put off by Freda's characterization of Cappi, who seems to be untouchable and can get away with anything. This gives the reader a false perception of life. There are erotic scenes in the novel that are very graphic, therefor I do not recommend it to anyone who is offended by such diction. I however, do recommend it to anyone who like drama and war novels. The author shows deep knowledge about the army, so I also recommend it to wannabe soldiers and soldiers. It also suitable for those action novel lovers.
