After gaining her independence from Japan, post war China was left a war-torn and dilapidated country. Constant conflicts between viral gangs seeking power was the order of the day. It is in this background that Greg Kater decided to set his novel Conflict On The Yangtze.

After Daniel Starfford, an MI6 agent, is shot while on a reconnaissance mission on an opium farm in China, Jack and Jamie are called upon to investigate the circumstances that led to his demise and bring down the cabal behind his murder. With this in mind, the two members of the Commonwealth Investigation Service work hand in hand with the British Intelligence and US armed forces to complete their mission. However, they soon discover that they had underestimated their enemy, who had the backing of some of the most powerful people in the region. They knew they had to stay on their feet to stay alive.

Their fate was also shared by Carna, who was Jamie's wife, and Henri, the father in-law. While searching for trees for timber in the jungles of the Philippines they cross paths with a gang with sinister motive. They have their own fare share of danger as they are kidnapped and detained by a branch of the cabal , that was trying to kill Jack and Jamie in China, running an operation in the Philippines. Sarah, Jack's half sister, plays the part of heroin as she shows courage and valor in the bid to rescue her friends.

As the action unfolds, Kater captivates the reader with a vivid description of the scene in which every battle takes place. As we see, in our mind's eye, bullets flying; we are also made aware of the setting surrounding the battle. We come to visualize every element from the flora to the fauna, making us part of the action.

I rate this novel 4 out of 4 . This is due to the evidence of the hard work Kater clearly put into writing this novel. As an Australian himself, his knowledge is not only limited to Australian culture and geography, he also shows deep knowledge in Chinese culture and tradition too. He narrates the action to the point that one might think he is watching a movie. There are no typo or grammatical errors , every word and dot is where it should be.

I recommend this novel to those action enthusiast. Anyone who is interested in the Orient and its culture will fall for this book. Kater dose not dwell on religion in this novel, making it suitable for everyone whatever his or her religious affiliation. There are no sex scenes in the novel and the narration of the story is not too graphic, making it suitable for anyone above 13 years of age. I also recommend the novel to those people who serve in the armed forces, as they have a thing or two to learn from this novel.
