Coppi only has six months left before his military service is over, but finds himself being sent to Vietnam anyways. He's a hustler from NY and is very resourceful, especially when he's constantly getting himself into trouble. While waiting for his deployment he decides to go out with some of the other guys one night and meets Sam. Sam is a young preacher's daughter who left Texas to make something of herself away from her family but ends up completely lost in life that has no idea what to do. Coppi finds himself completely immersed in helping her improve her life for some reason, and wraps himself up in her world without a second thought. Helping her with a medical situation, getting a house, a car, and freely sharing his savings with her all before being shipped out. Sam is quick to fall for someone, especially a soldier that saves her like Coppi- Meanwhile Coppi is not wanting to get committed while he doesn't even know if he'll be coming home as a vet or in a body bag.
A Police Action by A.A. Freda may seemed a bit rushed and therefore appear unrealistic at first, but is actually a really good novel. Coppi is sly, too smart for his age, and hilarious at times so I liked him immensely. I grew up in Fort Hood, Texas, and as an adult I managed to wind up with a Marine myself so I found it very relatable. How Coppi just rushes into things and how he just throws his money around to help Sam for no reason is exactly how my Marine was with me in the beginning, me being a single mom trying to get my life back in order. They don't seem to find material things very important.
I rated this 3 out of 4 stars because there were a few things that I didn't like about it. Just a few, so overall I did enjoy the book. It seems professionally edited and the author seemed to know what he was talking about military wise so it all made sense. The way he described Vietnam was both beautiful and terrifying in a way, because who wouldn't find being shot at any given moment terrifying.
What I liked most was Coppi's time on the base and in war because he's very clever and gets away with a lot. He's always messing with "lifers" who are the ones who joined on purpose to make the military a life long career. His antics can get pretty funny at times. I just found him too smart for his own good at his age so I found him very interesting to read about. I also liked how the author added the struggle someone has getting adjusted back here after their service because it's true. It is very difficult to adjust back to a civilian life and to find a job that your skills from the service apply to.
What I disliked most was just that I can't say I related to Sam very much as she's pretty fast to fall head over heels. I also didn't like the way the author made Coppi act for a little while after his service. I know he went to war but coming from someone who grew up with Vietnam vets and then in a Military base, I didn't find his "party" actions right after his service very realistic. However I liked how he added Coppi's moments of anger and depression because that was something I saw a bit of from soldiers in real life. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys war stories and a Dear John type whirlwind romance. Also to an older audience considering that it has a few detailed erotic scenes tossed in here and there.
