Upon reading the book No Dark Clouds by R.W. Nelson, one is transported into a completely different era and way of life. It takes place during the Passover at the time of the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Some would say this makes it a religious book, but because the author has chosen to put the main focus of the book not on these actual events, but rather on the lives of a small group of children, it seems to be more down to earth somehow. All the children are beggars on the streets, struggling just to live. They all have physical deformities of some type. The book is about how living during these times effects them and the changes they go through to get to a better way of living.

The story follows one boy in particular who, as the events leading to the craziness of the crucifixion and the "unbelievable" resurrection unfold, rises above it all and seems to find peace with his problems. It is in his story that this book contains interesting, special and maybe even profound messages on living. The book was overall a touching read that I think everyone, religious or non-religious, would enjoy.

One thing I really liked about the book was the author's portrayal of the characters, each being unique and intriguing. From evil murderers, to a beautiful singing child; it was very well done and led to the books interest. Another nice touch was his inserting of little snippets of thought, about real life and what is truly important, throughout the book. It was not overdone but subtle. One could easily gloss over it.

Some dislikes I had pertained mainly to the writing style. There were many areas where the writing rambled on and became too detailed, for example when the lad was winding down the streets and directions were being given. I also felt the use of paragraphs was overdone causing the reading to be very eye boggling. I basically felt it needed more editing. Because of this, I gave this book a 3 out of 4 stars.

Although I believe anyone could enjoy this book, those who have some religious background will enjoy it most, as it has religious themes throughout. Importantly, others who might also gather something special from this book may be those with some sort of pain in their life, weather physical or heartache, as this book carries inspiring thoughts about continuing on this rugged road we call life. This is also one of those books that could be read more than just once. I would indeed recommend this book to others.
