Whether you are a history buff or just like to take an occasional trip down memory lane, The Sojourners by T.L.Hughes offers an event filled adventure through recent history that is not only very readable, but relatable to many generations. As the reader begins the journey that traverses Europe, it is apparent the this is not the first foray across a continent that the three friends in the novel have taken together. Fortunately, while seemingly a sequel, The Sojourners is a lively read that can stand on its own.

The story is narrated by Mike who is a heart-broken twenty-something looking to start over in the 1980s music video industry with his best friends Decky and Luke. All three characters are written as people with whom any reader may be acquainted: the attractive friend who always manages to come out on top; the fun-loving, optimistic friend who can find the bright side in any situation; and, the reliable friend who keeps the other two on Earth.

The trio quickly give up on their music video dreams while meeting an extensive cast of international travelers who not only teach them about inexpensive European travel, but inspire and encourage the wanderers to follow the dreams they did not know that had. The journey includes escapades in London and Amsterdam before crossing the continent to Greece and Turkey. Along the way they have exhilarating adventures in unexpected places such as the London subway as well as dangerous misadventures on the streets of Amsterdam. Hughes keeps the story moving by writing in a manner that allows the reader to escape on the adventure with Mike and his companions.

Another element that Hughes weaves into the story is that of history. Most of the young travelers whom the wayward Americans encounter have politics on their minds and opinions about the Reagan era. Glimpses into how people from other countries felt about Hitler and WWII come to life during a stay in Munich. Additionally, this reviewer rather enjoyed the use of music, song lyrics and fashion trends from the 80s that are used to create a complete picture of the time period. The author successfully uses music references to establish connections between the characters, the places and the reader. These aspects make The Sojourners appealing to a wide audience.

Overall, this book rates a 4 out of 4 stars . The incredible quest that allowed the characters to self-reflect while discovering the world also affords the reader an opportunity to relive, or learn about, a simpler time in recent history. Through their new friendships they learn just how small the world really is. This book leaves the reader wanting more: either to learn the eventual futures of Mike, Decky and Luke, or simply another adventure from T.L. Hughes. The story also makes one wonder how much may have been autobiographical. Regardless, The Sojourners is a worthy read.
