Four Funny Potatoes is a humorous children’s book written and illustrated by Len Foley. The book is allegedly about four potatoes that sleep all day but put on a show at night. However, there are three potatoes Arnie, Jimmy, and Marvin. The fourth potato is actually a banana that is always mistaken for a potato despite its uniqueness and its numerous complaints. Will the banana be able to convince the others that he isn’t a potato? There are other food characters whose abilities are described poetically.

The potatoes start singing their song, but it is disrupted when Benny the banana cannot join in because of mistaken identity. He shares his abilities which are very different from the potatoes. He states he is yellow and shiny, unlike the potatoes that are brown and lumpy. This was my favorite part of the book because it teaches people to embrace their uniqueness. He also states he loves singing his own songs. However, the show is shut down when a human character enters searching for a meal, and bean, the director yells at them to run.

I found the book quite interesting. It has colorful pictures. The author uses real pictures slightly exaggerated with cartoon characteristics such as the arms, eyes, and teeth. The accompanying texts are also very colorful. These features easily attract children’s attention.

The book also has rhythm. It is achieved through rhyme. Dance and pants are an example of rhyming words. Repetition is also used in the songs. These features enhance musicality in the text.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was a very funny and educational read. The food characters were described humorously and creatively. It educates readers to appreciate themselves and accept their unique feature through banana’s characterization. It also taught the importance of teamwork when all the characters declared ‘we all sing best when we are singing as a team.’ I recommend these book to children especially those between three to eight years and any person interested in children’s books.
