Sigfried’s smelly socks is a children’s book written and illustrated by Len Foley for children aged 3-7. It is a dirty book. It stinks very badly. You should hold your nose before joining Sigfried in his search for the reason why his book smells so bad. The poor book has gone through so many disgusting things, that he just can’t pinpoint one reason. But, the worst smell that “burns the hair on his head” is from a pile of socks under his bed. So, what does he do? He decides to wash them. Here, there is a twist which will make young readers laugh out loud and there old people will at least chuckle while rolling their eyes.
Sigfried doesn’t seem to be the tidiest kid around and his sister definitely needs some potty training. This book can be used as an exercise in cleanliness. It can be used to illustrate what not to do with your things otherwise they will smell. Or it can just be a funny story for toddlers.
Parents should choose it for their kids with discretion, as some of them may decide to take the smells in the books literally and go on a smelly adventure of their own. If they know their child to be a little ‘experimental’, then they need to keep him/her away from this book because surely they don’t want a book with poop stains. Also, I won’t recommend it to be read by people who don’t find gross things funny. They will not like it as it contains a plethora of the grossest things you can find around a house. It will be a fun read you can share with your kid if you like to laugh out at gross smells.
The language used in the book is very simple. There are some words which they will need the meaning for but they are very small in number and won’t hinder the reading. Instead, they are words kids will love to learn. The use of rhyming makes it great for being read out loud. I won’t recommend it as a good night read, but any other time of the day, it will tickle kids and adults alike.
The images used are a combination of real pictures and illustrations. The illustrations are cheerful and interesting. The words and images have been arranged so that pictures are self-explanatory to a high extent. The font used and placement of words is very effective as both the words and images stand out. Though I have read this book in a .pdf format, I will recommend reading a hard copy of this book.
I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It is a wonderful read for children and adults alike.
