After reading Sigfriedrsquos Smelly Socks by Len Foley, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This is a stinking-cute little story for small children about various smells written in a way that is easily understandable. The illustrations in the book are very appropriate and entertaining. This is the best stinking little book for children that I’ve read in a long time. I gave this book 4 starts because this book can be a learning tool as well as a delight to read.
The book details different smells on each page, and how those smells came to be there. Although it is about smells and sloppiness, there is still a moral to the story in the end that can teach children a very important life lesson.
Teaching children lessons about smells, cleanliness, and the correct way to take care of things is necessary at an early age. It leads kids to not only take care of their possessions but can help promote good hygiene as they grow older. The book does this in a rhyming way that is reminiscent of Dr. Seuss. That is what I like most about the book.
The book is formatted in a way that can teach small children other things as well. For instance, the color of the text in the book matches the color of the sock being described, allowing small children to learn colors. There also pictures that show exactly what the book is talking about on each page. This creates a word association that can introduce reading to children in a fun way. Since the book is also quite humorous on a small child age level, it can hold the attention of children well, which is critical for small children who typically have smaller attention spans.
I only found one small thing in this book that I did not like so much. It was showing mustard from a waffle. What child eats mustard on a waffle? I think mustard is an acquired taste for most children anyway. But even that creates a moment for the child when they are thinking how yucky that is. (Or at least most children, but that is just my opinion from my experience with children.)
I suggest parents buy this book for their children while the kids are young. It should be read often in order to teach children at a level just before they start attending school. In addition, it can provide quality time between the parent and child. Buying and reading this book will help create a bond between parent and child, stimulate learning in the child, and provide moments of fun and laughter which are all great things for early childhood development.
