Sigfried’s Smelly Socks! is written and impressively illustrated by Len Foley. This is an interesting short book about a boy named Sigfried. The story tells of multiple reasons why his socks and the book itself smell horrendous. It has a hilarious beginning with an equally funny ending.

Sigfried welcomes you to the book and warns of the stench. He continues on in a rhyming way to explain what and why the smells are around. Sigfried is a messy boy who has discovered many things that cause foul stenches and tries to get rid of them.

Children reading this book will hopefully learn from Sigfried's mistakes. Using this book as a guide to learn how to investigate and solve the problem of forgotten messes. On the other hand, it could also be viewed as a guide on how to have a stinky messy room. For example, Sigfried used a slice of pizza as a bookmark. This could teach children to disrespect books.

The illustrations in this book are quite amazing. It is very impressive for an author to be able to write a book and draw the pictures in it as well. That being said it was a little off-putting to have real-life pictures mixed in. Sigfried talks about different foods throughout the book which is illustrated with pictures not drawings. If the entire book was illustrated with drawings I feel it would have elevated the level of interest.

The flow of Sigfried’s Smelly Socks is reminiscent of the styles of Shel Silverstein. Yet at times the rhymes and rhythms seemed to fall out of balance. At times the story follows an A B rhythm and at times it reads as more of a story and not a rhyme at all. The loss of rhyming rhythm can cause slight confusion as you read aloud.

Overall I enjoyed reading Sigfried’s Smelly Socks. Reading this book brought a smile to my face. I am undetermined on whether or not I will share this with my young child. I suppose she will learn bad behavior with or without Sigfried’s help, so I rate this book with 3 out of 4 stars. I would give it a 4 rating, but a part of me just can’t look past the loss or rhythm, the real-life pictures mixed in with drawings, and the impact Sigfried’s bad habits could have on a child. This could, however, be an amazingly funny gift for new parents.
