Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R. F. Kristi is the fifth book in a series and it’s a darling book. The characters are drawn so convincingly, and the plot is easy to follow. I love stories about cats, and I’m sure kids will like this story and want to read it over and over. The main characters in the story are three cats and a dwarf hamster. The cats’ mom is Missy and is, as the lead cat Inca states, ‘a humanoid jointly owned by us.’ Mom Missy runs the cheese shop where the cats hang out, controls their diet and is a clean freak. Missy’s Aunt Florence is also a character in the story; she’s the only family Mom Missy has.
The cats Fromage and Cara and hamster Charlotte are led by Inca, a Siberian cat. Inca wants to be a detective cat par excellence, and she leads her three companions, brother and sister Fromage and Cara, and the hamster Charlotte, on a detective adventure. All the cats in the story are described in a charming way that shows off their personality traits and how they fit into the overall story. I think children ages 8-12 yearsold can understand and enjoy this story. The scenes described create a very vivid picture and helped me enjoy the story as well.
Inca keeps a diary about her detective adventure. Its’ the first adventure she’s had since arriving in London from Paris. She fantasizes about her fame as the world’s greatest kitty detective. From her diary, she will craft a best seller telling about her detective adventures. The other cats Fromage and Cara, try to get Inca to make the diary about them, but Inca sticks to her guns and insists that the diary is hers and she will make it about their upcoming detective adventure.
Next door to Inca and her friends lives Monk, a Blue Russian cat and Terrance, a large dog. They live with their owner Solo and his assistant Hobbs. Solo is a world-famous detective. Terrence and Solo are great pals and work on detective cases together. The idea of a dog and a cat being best friends lends a note of curiosity to the story and is a good example of how kids can reach out to people and worlds beyond themselves. Terrence the dog tells Inca’s group about their friend Polo, a Pekinese dog and his missing human dad Raoul. Raoul has gone missing while climbing Mount Everest. The book demonstrates all kind of emotions the animals feel, and this is a good way for kids to learn about emotions and different ways to handle them. The story also highlights endearing but sometimes aggravating cat behavior that anyone who owns a cat will understand.
Boss the dog enters the picture. He is a large Rottweiler that the cats and the hamster are afraid of. He approaches the animals about working together to solve the case of a missing will. Inca’s group eventually finds out that Boss is friendly and kind, and they all work together to solve the case. A neighbor, Mr. Finchley, had written his will leaving his home and business to his adopted nephew Ned. The will comes up missing and the cats, the hamster and the dogs go on a detective mission to find out what happened to it and return it to Ned, the rightful heir.
Diary of a Snoopy Cat is a great read for kids and adults alike. Any adult who likes cats will like this book. It has humor and adventure and shows a wide range of emotions and personality types that can benefit and widen children’s worlds. The book is kid friendly and full of fun; the illustrations were good too. I give the book 3 out of 4 stars because the number of characters seems a bit overwhelming for children and I did find several grammatical errors. For example the sentence '...anyone wants some fresh cream.' Overall, it’s a fun and entertaining read and has a unique story plot.
