Toni the Superhero is obviously meant for children and it reflects the mind of its writer i.e. a mother concerned about raising emotionally healthy and balanced children. It is a very short book appropriate for the targeted age group which is ages 0-4. It is equally colorful and captivating, adding to its appeal for children.
The book tells us about Toni, the major character and central figure and his likes and abilities in very short, simple sentences with accompanying pictures and graphic illustrations to better get the ideas. He is a supposed Superhero i.e. an extraordinary child yet ordinary in all his dealings like any other child. He will only need to exhibit his extraordinary power when need be while he eats, play, sleep and do every other thing children his age does.
Graphic representation is a very effective teaching tool and cuts across all age group but most effective for children. This is what the author has put to good use. It will not only help the reader to understand the book well but also help in building his or her imaginative power. The graphic representation also say more than the words in the book. For instance, the pictures enable us to see that Toni has friends he enjoys swimming with, who he dances with etc.
However some of the picture do not correctly match with the captioning sentences or explanation e.g The sentence "Toni likes to jump" is on the page that precedes the picture where Toni was actually jumping. Also, "Toni likes to rescue animals" is written on the page following the actual rescue operation illustration. Another point to note is the fact that there are certain action of Toni that is a call of nature that has to be obeyed, like eating and sleeping. You don't necessarily have to like eating since you need it for survival, hence the sentences may sound more appropriate if it is something like "Toni likes eating good food" or "Toni also sleep like every other child"
Overall, Toni the Superhero is a good book. Simple, concise, short and appealing. In my opinion, it is a very good book for children old enough to read and even those who cannot read. The summary portion at the end of the book is an icing on the cake boosting the book's rating. I rate it 3 out of 4 stars because it is a very good read for the targeted audience and the graphic illustrations are superb. I recommend it for children 6 years and below.
