The Adventures of Millie the Rat is a delightful children’s story written by Amelia and Elaine Chalfin and illustrated by Ivory Bi.

Millie is a very curious rat. Millie’s best friend is a paleontologist named The Professor. They research dinosaur bones together, with Millie riding along on The Professor’s shoulder. One day, they discover something more than bones. The Professor unearths a strange green tube. The tube seems to hum, but only Millie can hear it. She crawls inside for a nap and wakes up in the past, when dinosaurs still roam the earth.

The illustrations in this book are stunning. Each page is filled from corner to corner with gorgeous imagery. The style is very illustrative, rather than cartoon-like. Each character is well-designed and stands out on the page.

As far as the story goes, it is charming. However, it does shift focus from learning about dinosaurs and what happened to them to the theory of evolution. This could potentially be problematic for those of various religions that do not believe in evolution. Millie’s interactions with the dinosaur were cute and informative.

I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It is well-written and thoroughly edited, with no significant errors. The story is cute and the illustrations are phenomenal. I deducted a star because of the inability to be enjoyed by all children, given the focus on evolution. I also found it a little strange that the title character had a name (Millie the rat), but all of the other characters were simply named what they are. The paleontologist was named “The Professor” and the dinosaur was named “Brachiosaurus”. If these characters had also been given names, the story would have been elevated. The Professor not having a name makes a bit of sense, as Millie would not be able to communicate directly with them. However, Millie converses with the dinosaur. I found the lack of names to take away from the story. This could have a negative impact on children being connected to the characters as well. It also would have been beneficial if there had been some light shed on what the green tube was and where it came from. There seems to be some significant mystery there, and it would have been fun to see where it came from.

I am wondering whether there was an intent behind the mystery and the lack of names as well. The diversion from the story's plot to the discussion on the theory of evolution would, indeed, sound confusing to others. Many thanks for the review, @Amanda Collier.
