Toni the Superhero, a children’s book written by R.D. Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke, was basically created for kids who are just beginning to learn how to read. The book talks about how Toni is regarded as a superhero because of what he’s capable of doing in his everyday life as a child, hence, creating an impression to children that they can also become a superhero by doing the same things that Toni’s character in the story is doing. Every page consists of a single sentence and a colored illustration to support it.

What I like about the book is its simplicity. It can be easily understood by children and it also serves as a good example to them. The illustrations are artistic, colorful, and attractive - which are great additions to help children who are novice readers to fully comprehend what is actually written in the book. There is no need for the drawings to be very sophisticated since there will be very little difference in how young readers will appreciate them.

The title of the book Toni the Superhero will capture kids’ interest because most children usually look up to superheroes. Although it merely describes Tony’s daily activities, the drawings help translate the words into actions for children to see and learn about. I made my four-year-old son read this book and tried to observe his personal impressions while he was reading it. After he finished reading, he told me that he had a great time reading the book because of its attractive drawings and he also anticipated every page - waiting for what Toni would do next. This has made it easier for him to read through every word since it does not contain any complicated vocabulary.

Another thing that I like about this book is that it shows how important it is for children to interact with other people, especially with other kids of their own age. Kids of the same age share similar mental and physical development, which help them interact on a similar level. This helps them develop skills like sharing toys, making friends, playing together, and establishing fair play. The book has its own charm even though it has no storyline and it is easy enough for my son to comprehend. My only complaint is that the book is too short. It should have been made longer since every page contains only one sentence.

I’m rating this book 3 out of 4 stars. For me, Toni’s attitude is what I think children nowadays should follow and learn from since Toni is able to balance his daily activities with his hobbies, playing with his friends, and helping out his mother with the household chores. This book will possibly help shape my son’s personality in a good way as well as other children’s. For this reason, I am recommending this book to mothers out there who would like to start off their kids with something simple and straightforward to read.
