Storm Chasing, by Scott Withers, is a charming short book featuring vibrant colors and engaging illustrations. The book is nonfiction, but its target audience is children. The main character is a fun little pup who travels with his master, chasing after various types of storms.

The illustrations were well-designed, and it was a joy to see the energetic puppy on each page. The author is an American meteorologist and environmental scientist who reports on hurricanes, floods, wildfires, tornadoes, blizzards, and droughts. Storm Chasing is written based on the author’s personal experience, making it unique from many other children’s books.

Storm Chasing covers the basic facts of severe weather seen in America. For example, the author describes what makes a snowstorm. The book could have been improved by the author providing more details on each storm. I would have liked to learn how we can prepare and stay safe concerning each storm. While addressing the types of storms is education, instructing children on how to prepare for these storms would be beneficial.

My son enjoyed reading this book with me, but it only gave the facts about different storms. He is a deep thinker, and storms make him nervous. Learning not just about the storms, but how to be prepared for each one would bring him some peace instead of freaking him out more. There are phrases in the book that state, “stay storm safe”, but it doesn’t explain how.

I would give Storm Chasing a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. The main character, a puppy who tells the story, was fun. I was excited to read about the severe weather, however, I was disappointed at the lack of safety information that could have easily been provided along with the storm descriptions. This book is created for children and is safe as it has NO profanity or sexual content. There were a few errors in the book. One word had an ‘s’ in the wrong place:
“Our cameras takes video of the storms.”
Another error is a missed punctuation, a period.
