[Following is a volunteer review of "Toni the Superhero" by R.D. Base.]

This book is written for pre-schoolers and introduces us to a new character called Toni the Superhero.I gave this book 3 OUT OF 4 stars. I would have given this book a 4 if it had been a little longer. This is also the first children's book I have reviewed so I don't have the experience yet to determine a perfectly scored book.Therefore, I feel comfortable saying I liked the book and it's theme.
Although I am aware that a childs book is typically geared for the beginner reader, I was just getting to know the character and the book ended.However, it is written for very young children with a limited attention span.The book is bright, and shows a young child doing normal daily activities of a youngster in a healthy environment. His world is active, enriching and healthy. I enjoyed the book, and I am sure other parents, teachers and children would enjoy it as well.I am looking forward to seeing what else is in store for the Toni character in future books.
I would enjoy reading this book to a youngster. I like that the character is Negro or dark skinned. I like to see cultural diversity in children's books.I like that the colours are bright in the pictures. I like the rhythm of the statement "Toni is Terrific". Toni goes about his day, eating,playing,helping at home and carrying on the normal activities that you hope the child reading can relate to.
The pictures are simple, and yet have enough detail to capture your attention.
This book was a positive role model for children. Toni is perceived and presented as a superhero for regular activities. He is positive because he has good nutrition, and has healthy habits such as sleeping well, playing, and is active and helps with the chores. This makes it possible for any child to be a "Superhero". Most Superheros have special talents that regular children cannot hope to achieve.That is not so with Toni. In this book, your child too, can be a Superhero. Anyone,it seems, can be a superhero.
This book is bright,easy to read and presents a real character for children to relate to. I enjoy that he like animals, and that it also encourages the reader in every child. I like that is bright and easy to read, and you do anticipate what will happen next to Toni. I would read the next book with Toni in it to see what adventures he gets up to.
I would buy this book for my child or one in my care.I enjoyed reading TONI THE SUPERHERO as my childrens book selection.
