Diary of A Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi and Illustrated by Jorge Valle is a children’s book about the adventures of Inca, a Siberian Kitty and her family and friends. Inca, writes in her diary as she attempts to become a Detective Cat Par Excellence! Lucky for her there is a mystery in her new neighborhood in London. A local dog, Boss, needs to find the Will of the recently deceased Mr. Finchley. Without the will, which has suspiciously gone missing, the human who takes care of Boss will be forced to leave his home, and Boss will have to work as a guard dog. Inca, along with her two siblings, the family’s hamster, and two dogs who live nearby take up the case. Together, they work to find the will and defeat the will-thief dubbed by the Kittens as “The Stinky Porkster”.

I gave this book three out of four stars [3 out of 4]. The story was entertaining to both a small child and the adult who is helping them read it. The book introduces some aspects of both English and French culture which is rarely found in children’s books. The characters are well developed and loveable. The antics which the animals get into are entertaining and keep the pages turning. Even though the book has silly moments, there are some real-life situations which are dealt with expertly by the author. These include one of the neighbor’s husbands going missing and then dealing with memory loss, the death of an older neighbor and the consequences of having a will left behind, and “that for some people life revolves around money and greed overcomes good sense”. The author introduces these serious issues in a way where a child can understand and learn from them.

Another thing that I liked about the book was the illustrations. They were very well done and complimented the story perfectly. Starting with the cover, and lasting throughout the chapters the illustrations were neat, relatable and when appropriate funny. In addition to pictures the author added cut away boxes of text to accent the story, including recipes and lists. These added another layer to the story which made it even more enjoyable.

I did not give the book four stars because I believe the author could have paid more attention to her editing. There were multiple typos in the book, some of which could have been easily noticed and fixed. The author likes to put larger, all capital letter text in between some of her paragraphs, and while this is eye catching for the child reading the story, the words chosen did not always flow with the rest of the page. The author also uses bullets throughout the story, but they are not always necessary or well placed.

Overall, I would recommend the story to anyone with a child who is ready for a short chapter book, either to be read to them, or to be enjoyed on their own. The book is part of series, and although I haven’t read the remaining novels yet, if they are as good as Diary of a Snoopy Cat, they are sure to entertain and bring joy to your children just he same.
