Review of Halloween with Snowman Paul
Transport your children to a magical realm with this exquisitely illustrated storybook, Halloween with Snowman Paul by Yossi Lapid, where they'll embark on an adventurous journey to the spooky yet very fun treehouse.
The book's theme is catered to Halloween. In this book, a boy representing the child who would read the book or the child whom the book would be read to, for example, by their parents, embarks on a journey to the treehouse on Halloween. On the way, they'll come across some obstacles. Warning boards with scary warnings would be placed along the way to the treehouse. They'll witness aliens, witches, ghosts, dragons, and so much more on this journey, all in a very fun and adventurous way. The journey will end on an adorable note.
Many may believe that writing books for children is the easiest thing to do, but in reality, it is the trickiest job, especially when the theme is spooky. You must be very careful with your words so that the book will not scare children away or traumatize them while presenting the spooky aspects instead of making them enjoy the book. We have seen so many cartoons getting discontinued for this same reason. However, the author nailed this aspect with the presentation of this book. And that is what I liked most about this book. The warnings on the boards are carefully chosen to pique curiosity about going to the treehouse while giving out a gentle, scary touch that would not overwhelm the children. But the best part is the visualization. The cartoons that were discontinued were only because the scary, monstrous figures traumatized the children. And that's where the book again struck its perfection. The visuals aligned with the words perfectly, yet it's what makes this book fun for the children. The scary figures, for example, the dragon, were presented in such a way as to cause a smile upon seeing the illustration. It's the perfect blend of words and visualization.
I would like to give a shout-out to the illustrator, Joanna Pasek, for the incredibly beautiful illustrations that made this book so perfect. I do not think the pictures can be any better than how they are in the book. The colors, the figure, everything is perfection. It is also very intriguing to witness so many diverse adventures and characters put into a succinct piece, which is perfect for children, as they will be unlikely to sit through a long book. The warnings were written poetically, and the font was appropriate and creative.
There are some points I want to mention. The Halloween theme may make the book a seasonal title with limited year-round appeal. Please be clear; I'm not pointing it out as a negative aspect. The book can be read at any time of the year, but it will be most enjoyable during Halloween because the whole book is about Halloween. Additionally, I have a PDF file, and according to that, the cover of the book could be a little bit more colorful since the background is white. It can look more beautiful with a light baby blue tint instead of white. These are some of my observations, not negative remarks. With that said, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because I did not find any editorial errors or negative aspects. Unnecessary capitalizations were very obvious to be stylistic preferences, not errors. I recommend this book to children aged 4 to 8 and to parents looking for an adorable piece for their children. It was great reviewing this book.
