Diary of a Snoopy Cat details the adventures of, you guessed it, a cat with an extraordinary talent for snooping. Since the book is in the form of a diary, the tale is told from the entirely subjective view of the snooping cat, Inca. Inca begins the diary by introducing each of the members of her family. Then she quickly explains that the diary is being written to chronicle the details of her detective adventures.
Inca and her family have just moved to the area but have already formed many friendships. Despite the fact that Inca has never solved an official case, these friends turn to her for guidance when situations get sticky. Since this snoopy cat wants so desperately to be a renowned detective, she plays it cool and confident in order to gain two solid cases throughout the course of the book.
What is perhaps the most surprising aspect of this book is the way that the human lives seem to be so intertwined with and influenced by the lives of their pets. It is reminiscent of when I was a child and was so confident that I could help my parents with tasks that were far beyond my scope. In that way, I think that this book certainly is easier for children to connect with than adults.
Overall, the format of the book was a bit of a negative point for me. There were subtitles in the middle of pages on one side, then the next page would practically be blank. I don’t think that this would be too much of a deterrent for younger readers, but I would have preferred a bit more structure. On the other hand, I did think that it was charming that the illustrations were dispersed randomly throughout the text. It is certainly fitting when you consider the truly random nature of kittens.
Speaking of kittens, if you are a dog-person that is skeptical of reading yet another tale that pits cats against dogs, fear not. While this tale has an undeniable skew in the favor of cats, it also mentions the good traits that dogs have to offer. In fact, Inca may end up with a few unexpected friends of the canine sort. However, there are a few too many characters in the story and I feel like that could be a point of confusion for the target audience of this book.
I have rated this book a 3 out of 4 stars. It would be a great book for a parent to read out loud to a child between the ages of four and eight. It was a bit too long to hold the attention span of my two-year-old, but the imagination level of Inca will undoubtedly be a character that he can relate to when he’s a bit older. I think that the classics that children want to hear repeatedly have a simplicity that this story lacks due to the overwhelming number of characters. Consequently, I removed one star.
