Learning disguised as a fun bonding moment is what many parents are looking for, and Puffy and the Formidable Foe is the book that gives just that. Puffy and the Formidable Foe by Marie Lepkowski and Ann Marie Hannon a simple story about a cat that adventures outside his backyard to explore and along the way he sees the world. In the book, there are over 100 words, though less than 250, and assisting the short sentences, are drawings, which any child can find easy to understand. The learning comes in the form of activities, which the parent and child could complete are meant to create a bonding moment, that is a benefit to the child. Also, as a reward for completing the activity, the child gets their own coloring page.

The activity, which is explained at the beginning of the book, is meant to allow to the child to interact with text, other than just reading it. The activities are mainly questions that the parent would ask the child, such as “what part of the book is your favorite and why is it your favorite?” These type of questions lets the child develop the skill of active reading, which is when the reader questions events within a book and expresses how they felt about a phase or scene.

The book is a breeze to get through and does not take long to finish. One could finish the book before bedtime if one wanted to. One of the things that I like about the book was that words that rhythmed with each other where underlined to show the relationship between two words. Also, that the drawings in the book were simple, they did not have a lot of detail yet illustrated the scenes without confusion. There are also words in the book that a child may not be exposed to on an everyday basis, so while reading this, a child gets a chance to learn new vocabulary.

There are no spelling mistakes or grammar error. However, some of the sentences are a bit awkward to read, as they do not flow off the tongue that well and are a little longer than they need to be. Other than that, I think this book is an excellent tool for those starting to learn words and who are learning how to read. The text of the book is readable though, I wish it were a little bit larger so that the words would be easier to read, and page sixteen’s illustration made me strain my eyes because the drawing looked out of place. The picture looked like it was copied repeatedly and place next to each other to make a pattern, which just hurts the eyes.

Overall, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because there are no spelling error or grammar errors and the book is handy for children who are learning to read. The book allows a child to learn about the process of active reading, meaning that they interact with what they read, and promotes quality time between a parent and child. However, I could not rate the book a four because some of the sentences are awkward to read and page sixteen was a bit too much to look at. I would recommend this book to parents, as it is not a waste of money.
