Sigfried’s Smelly Socks written and illustrated by Len Foley is a short, funny story about a young boy and his quest to clean his socks. Not really! This cute story follows Sigfried as he searches for the culprit behind the smell that’s coming from his book. He questions many disgusting things using rhymes and eventually comes around to the idea that it just might be his smelly socks that are causing the bad smell. With a funny ending on just how he decides to solve that problem!

This story, though not complex plot-wise, is just the story to read to your pre-k to 1st grade child. With lots of rhyming words and descriptions of gross things on each page, it’s sure to start up a fit of giggles and “ew!!”s from your kids or classroom. Be prepared for lots of laughing if you do choose to read this to your child because, trust me, it’ll come.

In addition to the wonderful use of rhyming and the humorous, lighthearted mention of disgusting, smelly foods, Foley sticks funny drawings and images on each page. Some of the figures that are drawn are reminiscent of cartoons in books that I used to read when I was a child. Very similar artwork, stylistically, to that of David Shannon’s “No, David!”. All the figures are drawn somewhat disproportionally, but funny nonetheless. The mix between these cartoon-ish images (that were obviously drawn) and the images that seem to be pulled off the internet may be a little garish for an adult to enjoy but a child would most definitely be satisfied.

The use of descriptive words in this story is really wonderful as well. I would very much enjoy reading this to my child and having them laugh at all the gross words and exclamations in this book. There is a lot of room for the parent to become a performer when reading this story aloud and even for the child to step in and sound out or read the story on his/her own. Though some of the jokes in this story are obvious and get straight to it, other are somewhat implicit and may lead to the child having to ask why it’s funny or think to themselves why what's being described might be something smelly.

I very much enjoyed reading this story and would definitely read it to my child when it comes time to do the laundry or get some cleaning done! Beware for any parents who like to avoid the use of potty-humor, there is a decent amount of that in this story. Overall, I’m happy to give this story 4 out of 4 stars. I would highly recommend it to anyone with young children in need of a laugh.

The mix of cartoon and real life images did throw me a bit at first, but since my girls were getting a kick out of it, I decided to stop being such an adult and enjoy it :D . This was certainly a fun book to read and review.
