Sigfried’s Smelly Socks by Len Foley is a children’s story reminiscent of his own amusing experiences with Becky and Sofia’s pile of unpleasant smelling laundry. Sigfried, the lead child character, tells the story in such a descriptive way that everyone is left holding their noses and laughing along with him through each vibrant, colorful page. All ages can relate to this story of unpleasant smells cast in an amusing light that tells us it’s about time to do the laundry and chores!

The character goes through his unclean bedroom as if his mother just told him to tidy up and remembers smells, family episodes, and food items as if he was taking the garbage out as well. He goes through every color of socks he has hidden under his bed with his pet by his side and a book that has obviously been his favorite and is now covered with old stains. This adds to his family memories of enjoying the book at the dinner table years ago.

This book is highly entertaining and educational for children ages 1-7. Family members and educators can delight in expressing themselves with the author’s own words, artwork and use of IPad Pro software. Creative fancy fonts and illustrations contrasted with real-life photographs are used for an enjoyable rhyming read-aloud together. Children can spend time with this book alone as well learning how colors and common food items are spelled out as words. They are encouraged to practice their imaginative senses along with memories of group or family story time. The book has characters with big noses and pictures of bananas, chewing gum, pizza, peanut butter and jelly and more. Sigfried also demonstrates his chores were done as he cleaned the book with a hose on one occasion. How he cleans his dirty socks (so his family won’t find out he hid them under the bed) at the end will leave everyone laughing in astonishment!

I have rated this book 3 out of 4 stars. Although it is geared toward learning different senses, colors, words and food items for pre-school age children, some of the words used and harsh descriptions of events may be a bit too offensive for some families or educators. One should read the book first in its entirety and use your best judgment depending on the audience at hand. It describes his sister’s diapers in the book in detail and brother’s nose with a cold. It may be a giggle to some, but too unpleasant for others to be funny. That is the only reason I did not rate the book four stars.

Sigfried’s Smelly Socks, with words and illustrations by Len Foley, won the Mom’s Choice Award which denotes excellence and is trusted worldwide by parents, media, educators and retailers alike. This is no surprise due to its aforementioned high-quality design, cost and appeal to all ages, original way of conveying childhood experiences, and entertainment value for all involved. Everyone can truly put yourself in his socks and enjoy creating delightful, silly childhood memories out of unpleasant but necessary household tasks.

Loved your review. I chose this children's book as my first review. It definitely is funny and gross at the same time.
