The novel Puffy and the formidable foe which was written by Marie G. Lepkowski, Ann M. Hannon and Margaret B. Hannon and illustrated by Ann M. Hannon and Margaret B. Hannon tells of a cat which set out to find a rat but unfortunately meets a smelly cat. The writers' aim of writing this novel is to help children with their reading, spelling and identification abilities. The novel contains pictures which makes it catchy when children tend to see it, as children love pictures of cute cats and have a great excitement filled spirit of adventure.

The story sets in as puffy sets out on an adventure of finding a rat. He looked from hole to hole but couldn't find any all he could find was a mole. During the afternoon Puffy decided to rest but the nap was interrupted by another cat. There and then an event occurred which made Puffy learn his greatest lesson. What went on between Puffy and the new cat? What lesson did Puffy learn in the story? Find all the answers in the novel.

The authors used rhyming words to teach children ways of pronouncing certain words like in places where the authors used words like hole and mole as in "He poked his head into a hole but all that came out was a mole". Another part was where they used the words woods and hoods as in " so he scampered into the woods to rest beneath some mushroom hoods. These words teaches children the basic principle in word pronunciation and also shows the relationships between words when it comes to the spelling aspect.

The authors also with the novel created a sense of adventure in children. Every part of the novel was written to create excitement in children and to develop their ability to imagine things. The authors well aware of a child's fantasy and dreams have put into the novel all the elements to create a fantastic scene in their memories. The novel expands children's way of thought, reasoning and imagination. The children in question explore their minds with these fantasies set in this novel.

Conclusively, I highly recommend this novel for parents to read to their children as bedtime stories or as a way of improving their abilities but the novel might be too short as children will long for more. Perfect combination for children I say.
