Let’s get the facts straight: “It is normal for dogs to eat poop.” I know many dog owners do their best to stop their dogs from eating poop. How about training them on the kind of poop to eat? In The Very Hungry Beagles Guide to Poop by M. Jackson, Lucky, Mr. Beckham, and Peanut, a dog analyzes 12 different kinds of poop. The dog examines poops from swans, sheep, chickens, horses, bunnies, fish, cows, possums, hedgehogs, goats, dogs, and cats. Which one is the best? Find out in this book.

For a children’s book, The Very Hungry Beagles Guide to Poop was colorfully designed and illustrated. Ros Webb did a fantastic job with the illustrations. I liked that the drawings appeared on different pages from the texts. That way, children could focus on one thing at a time.

I liked the structure of the book. The book followed a pattern that would help children follow the narrative easily. When analyzing the different poops, the author described and gave scores based on some parameters. The parameters for scoring were smell, taste, texture, and rarity. This systematic approach to analyzing the poops would teach children the skill of analysis.

I had initially commended the colorful nature of the book. However, there was an instance where the author could have used a different background color. When describing the bunny poop, the author said it was the chocolate drop of the poop world. I had expected the background color to be chocolate or brown. However, the author used a purple background color. Although this did not affect my enjoyment of the book, a brown color would have been a better choice.

The book was professionally edited. The color observation I made in the preceding paragraph was not enough for me to penalize the book. Therefore, I’d rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Children who love dogs will find this book fascinating.
