Stevie Tenderheart Books Wait a Minute! (An Illustrated Novella) by Steve William Laible speaks to many children’s trouble: insomnia. Steve begins his book with inspiring quotes that emphasize children’s position in the world. My favorite quote in the book is by Christopher Moore, who posits, “Children see magic because they look for it.”

Stevie expresses his love for his bed from the first-person point of view. He says it’s where he hides, plays, grows, sleeps and even dreams. In that regard, he wants to fill up his bed with balls but discards the thought owing to how uncomfortable they’ll be to sleep on. Stevie also does not want to bring farm animals to his bed because they’ll attract many spiders, bugs and houseflies.

Steve has used different writing styles in his narration. Some words and phrases have been written in different font sizes and colors, enabling him to emphasize content words. This is what I liked the most about the book, as the words could also be used to teach elementary school learners vocabulary. For instance, they could be asked to read aloud the colored words and then corrected in case their pronunciation is wrong.

I also enjoyed Stevie’s imitation of animal sounds in this book. This will enrich children’s reading experiences as they try to pronounce the various sounds. The colorful illustrations that graphically represented what Stevie was doing at a particular time added variety to the narration and brought things into a clear perspective. For instance, seeing the chaos that farm animals would bring to Stevie’s bed justified his decision not to have them in his bed.

There is nothing I liked the least in this book. I found two errors while reading, cementing my belief that it was professionally edited. I’m positive it merits a rating of five out of five stars and recommend it to children between the ages of six and ten.
