Each time I took my beagles for a walk in the woods, I could not fathom how they seemed to enjoy eating human poop. I thought it was disgusting, especially since most of it was days or weeks old and was already decaying. However, The Very Hungry Beagles Guide to Poop by M. Jackson et al. was my eye-opener for why beagles seem to enjoy poop.

Jackson et al. narrate this book from one of the beagles’ perspectives, making it sound like the beagle is having a one-on-one conversation with readers. This perspective also shifts to the plural sense when the beagle is describing the different poop they come across. The beagles discussed poop from twelve different animals they sampled and rated each poop according to smell, taste, texture and rarity. They also came up with an overall score that merited poop from one animal to the next. For instance, swan poop ranks highest in their merit list owing to its great smell and texture, categories in which it scored the most points.

This book has colorful illustrations that complement the narration. The illustrations are not gross images that would disgust children and detract from their enjoyment of the book, but paintings of the different animals discussed. What I loved most about this book was the euphemistic element that the authors used to shield their readers.

I found no errors while reading this book, justifying my belief that it was edited exceptionally well. This book not only seeks to entertain and educate children on why dogs seem to enjoy poop, but the authors narrate it in a way that makes it look like a letter to other beagles or animals that enjoy feasting on poop. The justification for the different ratings of each poop is evidence that the authors extensively researched the content.

There is nothing I liked the least in this book, which I happily rate five out of five stars. I recommend it to children between the ages of three and seven.
