The Very Hungry Beagles Guide to Poop by M. Jackson, Lucky, Mr. Beckham, Peanut is a fascinating and “just for fun” kind of children’s book. It addresses questions such as why dogs love sniffing, rolling over, or eating other animals’ poop. The book takes us on an adventure where the beagles teach us about the different kinds of poop that animals excrete. Therefore, readers who won’t find the discussion about poop repulsive will appreciate it the most.

The book describes different animals’ poop; the beagles inform us what these animals love eating and how their poop looks, which is dependent on what the animal eats. An example is the goat. His poop is usually unpredictable since he eats different kinds of things, including clothes. That way, the beagles get to guess the next flavor or taste of his poop. For instance, the beagles also reveal what these animals’ poop tastes like, how it smells, its texture and the availability of the poop, depending on whether these animals are found in your location. The fittest beagles survive the hunt. They must constantly be prepared to flee if a dangerous animal pursues them while eating.

What I loved the most about the book were the fun facts about the beagles. I learned that the beagles love rolling over other animals’ poop because it smells like perfume to them. Though shocking, it’s quite a hilarious discovery. I also enjoyed how the beagles sampled the animal poops they encountered and even went to the extent of rating them. I found it more hilarious, especially when the beagles justified the ratings for each poop. The swan must have been proud of themselves for having the best poop and it would be interesting if other animals learned the secret.

There is nothing I disliked about the book. I loved the brightly colored pictures used in it. They complemented the Beagles’ narration and enhanced comprehension. Children will be able to deduce what the beagles are describing just from the pictures, making their reading enjoyable. They will also learn about the different animals they come across and possibly identify them.

The book was excellently edited, with no grammatical errors or mistakes. For the humor and the fun aspects of the book, I award it five stars out of five stars. I recommend this book to dog owners who wonder why their dogs are usually interested in other animals’ poop. They will understand why and won’t prevent the beagles from having fun. I also recommend it to children, as they will be able to link the different poops with the animals that excrete it.
