The Very Hungry Beagles Guide to Poop by M. Jackson, Lucky, Mr. Beckham, and Peanut is a brilliant, unusual, unique, and awesome book about dogs and other animals. Lucky, Mr. Beckham, and Peanut are Beagles. The Beagles went on a “sniffari” and thoroughly analyzed the smell, the taste, the texture, and the rarity of poop of hedgehogs, chickens, bunnies, swans, possums, fish, cats, horses, sheep, goats, and cows. The Beagles then reported their findings to their “Butler”, M. Jackson, who recorded and published the Beagles' findings. What did the Beagles discover on their “sniffari”? Whose poop did they like the most?

The Very Hungry Beagles Guide to Poop by M. Jackson, Lucky, Mr. Beckham, and Peanut is one of the most wonderful and humorous books I have read about dogs. Indeed, the Beagles’ humor is second to none. My favorite is their advice about cow poop: “Make sure it is cow poop you’re snacking on and not bull poop, unless you enjoy being chased around a field while your Butler yells at you to move your short, fat, hairy legs faster” (p.25). The colorful illustrations by the talented Ros Webb are amazing. Ros has done a great job with stunning, colorful paintings of animals in their natural habitat, making the animals easy for children to recognize and remember.

I cannot fault any aspect of this great book. It is professionally produced in all respects and exceptionally edited, as I did not find any errors. So, I wholeheartedly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Audience-wise, the authors intended this book for children. I am a few decades older, but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of reading this book. I instantly took to Lucky, Mr. Beckham, and Peanut and enjoyed relating them to my dogs. I think that this book is a great, fun read for animal-loving families. Young readers can benefit from the beautiful and colorful images of animals. Parents can enjoy educating children about animals, amuse themselves with the Beagles’ perspective on animal poop, and relate the Beagles to their dogs. So, I highly recommend this book to every animal lover, of any age. Parental guidance for young readers is advisable, just so they do not attempt a sniffari.
