Review of The Very Hungry Beagles Guide to Poop
“The Very Hungry Beagle Guide to Poop” by M. Jackson, Mr. Beckham, Lucky, & Peanut.
The Very Hungry Beagle Guide to Poop is an illustrated children's novel written by M. Jackson, Mr. Beckham, Lucky, & Peanut and illustrated by Rob Webb.
The book is about two beagles critiquing the different types of poop of different animals. Talking about who those poops belonged to, the taste, the smell, and the texture. They were accompanied by beautiful artwork of the beagles and the different animals, whether a hedgehog, a bunny, a hen, a cat, or a swan.
If you think this book sounds weird because it is, I can easily put this book in the absurdism category for a children's book. And the absurdity is what makes this book so much more special.
The story is quite weird; there is so much discussion about poop, its smell, texture, and taste that kids can get a bit grossed out by that. My niece did get a bit weirded out by all that, but the more you keep reading, the more you understand the absurd humour of it.
The book can well be described as a review book on animal poop. This sounds like such a bizarre concept, but the bizarreness of this book makes it so interesting.
The artwork done by Ros Webb is exceptionally beautiful; it is so colourful without being chaotic and smudgy. The artwork is bright yet soothing to the eyes.
If your child is not at the age where they can read, just give them the book and turn the pages. The vibrant colours used in the artwork will help with their cognitive development through colours. Research has shown how bright colours can help the development of children’s brains.
The book is written flawlessly; it has such great structure throughout the book. The writing had a flow to it; every chapter followed a structure almost like how a poem is structured, without being a poem and yet having a proper flow to the writing. And the editing is done exceptionally well, too.
The only negative of this book is that it is too short, which is just a nitpick of a happy reader. I, as an adult, wanted more, not just for the story but for the artwork too. Just looking at this colourful book makes you feel less stressed, and this is coming from someone who has sensory sensitivity, and not everything works well with my senses. And my niece wanted to know more about the poop of different animals, which I thought was interesting as this book ended up making a child curious about learning something new.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book is perfect for kids who can appreciate absurd stories, bizarre humour, and beautiful artwork.
