Overall, I enjoyed the book, "Snatched Up To Heaven" by Jemima and Paul Arvind. The message was relevant and mostly told with an age-appropriate, kid friendly audience in mind. The illustrations were colorful and enticing and the characters were likable and believable. On page 3, there was a comforting analogy of "going through the clouds" was like being on a plane to grandma and grandpa's. I think many kids will find this relatable and reassuring. Also, on page 8, I liked how the idea of having manners is important and relayed by the authors by one of the characters stating that it was important to knock first before going into the house. I really liked that the bible verses were at the bottom of the page so kids could go back and find more information. I like that there is diversity in the book, most clearly on page 16.
That being said, there were some things I did not enjoy about it. First of all, the word "snatched" in the title is a little off-putting and maybe scary for children, as I associate that word with being taken in an unwillful manner. like being kidnapped. Perhaps using a word such as travels or journey may be more appropriate. Secondly, when Emma is talking about her dream of going through the gates of Heaven and there aren't any lights, that may be concerning and scary for some children. Equally frightening is the description (on pg. 26) of hell containing worms that bite people and turn into snakes. I think this is too much for children to envision and fear that if they make a mistake, this is how they envision being punished. Also, do people in hell not have clothes or hair as described on page 27? Frightening visualization. Also, on page 13, Jesus is described as being handsome, but is vague in it's description. Is it appropriate for small children to view Jesus in this way? Is it really necessary to "hug and kiss" Jesus when the children meet him? This may be borderline inappropriate for some. I think the overall story is good; however, I'm a little concerned that the message at the end of the book is that "people should tell everyone they can about Jesus so they can go to Heaven". Although I believe religion is important, it is not for a child to spread the word of God to EVERYONE he/she meets. In today's society, this may be seen as politically incorrect and fear the ramifications. They need to know that there are specific times/places when this is appropriate.
