Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
In Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures, Mary Grace’s parents are forced to leave their children, Mary Grace and Donny, for two years due to a special missionary assignment in Kenya, Africa. As a result, the children are sent to stay with their grandparents in California. Mary Grace, a ten-year-old girl, is unhappy about the separation and wonders how life without her parents will be and what California has in store for her. Additionally, she fears how her brother, Donny, who has Down Syndrome, will be treated.
Settling into their new school in California, both Mary Grace and Donny start to feel comfortable. However, Mary Grace's fears turn into reality when she starts receiving anonymous notes insulting her brother and threatening her, Donny, and their new friend. Determined to uncover the culprit, Mary Grace seeks help from the Grandma Gang, and together, they devise a plan.
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine Anna Pepe is the first book in the Grandma Gang children’s book series. The book consists of 17 chapters, and is narrated from a third-person perspective. It is an exciting fictional novel, although the author, reveals that the character of Donny was inspired by her own brother. Through the story, the book highlights significant social behavior that is essential for younger readers. Notably, the author beautifully portrays Mary Grace's love and care for her brother, presenting her as a well-mannered girl, which makes her one of my favorite characters. Likewise, Donny's positive and cheerful behaviour makes him easily likeable.
The storytelling is commendable, as the author employs a simple and understandable pattern, making it highly suitable for children. However, I must confess an initial confusion as Mary Grace, who is supposed to be ten years old, most times behaved and spoke older than her age. This is attributed to the well-developed characterizations in the book.
Overall, I found Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures to be a perfect book. It is both entertaining and enlightening. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is effectively organized. The book's editing is excellent, as I discovered no errors while reading.
In conclusion, this is a well-written and well-edited book, earning a rating of 5 out of 5 stars from me. The book conveys valuable lessons and messages, making it highly recommended for all children.
