Through beautiful illustrations the orcas of the Salish Sea come alive in the book Orcas Forever. Marie-Paule Mahoney shares details of the lives of the Southern Resident orcas, while children are able to enjoy the illustrations of Ginger Triplett. This book will bring the orca families alive in the imaginations of the children who read or listen to this book.

Chronicled are the exploits of three orca pods who live together, yet remain separate, similar to the ways of man. Similarities are made throughout the tale including the knowledge of dialects existing for the mammals. Readers will learn of the strong connections that exist between mothers and their offspring. They will also gain insight into the role of the females in the community.

The story includes scenarios that will make you laugh out loud and those that may bring a tear to your eye. Though this is a children's book, I believe it is one that adults will enjoy as they share it with those younger readers. The book is one that may inspire a child to want to learn more about orcas, whether they be from the Salish Sea or found elsewhere.

The author has also shared the negative aspects affecting the Southern Resident orcas. Information is shared about the foods the orca needs to survive as well as what is hindering the availability of this food source. Included at the conclusion of the story is a bibliography allowing the reader to delve deeper into the study of the orca.

There were a few errors I found in the text, but they did not detract from the story in any way. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 for the easy flow of the story and the beautiful images that accompany the text.
