Overall, I would give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. This book’s title indicates that it is meant for children, but the way it is formatted and written, it does not seem like anything a child would read. There are several instances in the book where it could use some extra commas. They also talk about things in strange ways. The sentence structure is poorly done. There are inconsistencies in the tone and tense. It used passive wording sometimes, but not consistently. They also had examples in the book that were incorrect. Grapes do not grow on trees. The main character’s wording did not sound like anything a child would say. While the overall story is not bad, the way it was presented and the wording was clumsy and uncomfortable. If the words were split up and placed on the images, it would make it more readable for a children’s book. The over use of the passive voice, especially the word “had” makes the book frustrating to read. The page that is called “Emma has lots of fun” is especially difficult to follow as written with the “Mommy” and “Daddy” dialog not making sense in the order it is written in. Someone who does not care much for inconsistencies in grammar may enjoy this book a little bit more. I just don’t see this book doing well as a children’s book.
