Snatched Up to Heaven for Kids by Jemima Paul and Arvind Paul is a children's book discussing religious themes. Emma, an eight-year-old, is the protagonist of this story. Emma starts having dreams where she and her six-year-old sister Bella are carried up to heaven by angels and shown what heaven looks like. She describes these dreams to her parents, and her parents take it as a teaching opportunity to teach their daughters about God's love for them and how Jesus is their saviour. After many consecutive dreams of heaven, Emma dreamed of hell, and it scared her very much. She realises that she does not want herself or anyone else to go to hell. Her parents teach her that telling people about God and Jesus' love for his people will help them get into heaven. Thus, Emma decides that she will tell everyone she can about Jesus and how they can be saved from hell.
This book is well-written, with clear, concise language that can be understood well enough by its target audience. The book is also exceptionally well edited, since I could not find a single typo or grammatical error. The illustrations were very colourful, attractive, and visually pleasing to both adults and younger readers. Teaching children about God's love to save them from hell is the main theme of the book. The book does its job well by showing children how much Jesus loves them and how important it is to obey God so that they can get into heaven. The lessons taught in this book were gentle enough for young readers. Something I particularly liked about the book is that we see Emma and her sister Bella learning these lessons by coming to conclusions based on their own understanding of religion rather than blindly accepting what is taught to them.
I personally feel like the message of preaching about one's own religion to others is emphasised a little too much in this book. Emma and her sister Bella realise in the end that they need to tell others about God so that they can enter heaven. Telling others about one's own religion may come across as preaching, which most would take negatively in today's world. Children who grow up believing they must make everyone believe in their religion will face problems in the real world, where most would not take kindly to being told that their religion is wrong and that they are going to hell. That kind of mindset is also contrary to the belief that everyone requires religious freedom. Hence, I believe it would be more fitting to the present society if the book focused more on teaching children about God so that they can be better people and go to heaven, rather than teaching their religion to others.
Overall, I think this book deserves a rating of 4 out of 5. The only reason I deducted a star is because of the themes of religious conversion that I personally believe are being instilled in children in this book. This book is obviously suited for religious readers and for children from the age of 6 to 10, depending on their proficiency in reading. This book can be a wonderful one for parents to read alongside their children and use to start a conversation about God with their children.
