Review of Snatched Up to Heaven for Kids
Snatched Up to Heaven for Kids was a 3/5. It was enjoyable to read and was written well. It is very accessible for young children due to the engaging pictures and child-like dialogue. I was very impressed with the footnotes referencing Scripture passages. I have never seen that in a children’s book and love the credibility of those sections as it is a creatively instructional book for children. The parents and children should be able to fact check. I also really appreciated the gospel presentation and direct address to parents at the end of the book. It really hammered in the desired takeaway.
The reason for the moderate rating is due to several factors:
The first factor relates to the biblical inaccuracy and exclusivity of the depictions in the illustrations. The illustrations only depict white people and are not inclusive, which blatantly contradicts Scripture and does not help the child (or parents, for that matter) to be well-inform. Specifically Jesus, Esther, and Noah should not have been depicted as caucasian because they were not in the biblical account. Also, the illustration of the feast includes several meats as a primary part of the meal. This is not discussed in the Bible. It is actually questionable at the least because the presence of edible meat as we know it involves the death of an animal. We know for sure from Scripture that there will not be death anymore.
The second factor relates to some inaccuracy and inconsistency in the text itself. The text refers to the people in hell not wearing clothes or having any hair, yet the illustration on the following page depicts them with both of these. Those details are not discussed in the Bible, so the confusion and inconsistency could have just been avoided entirely if that detail had been left out. The omission of that part of the description would have made the book more appropriate for young children as well. Additionally, the text refers to Jesus and God, sometimes referring to Jesus as God’s Son. There is one reference to God being their father (not capitalized). There is no clarification given as to whether or not Jesus is God, which is a very important thing to clarify for young children as you instruct them with respect to sharing the gospel.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the mom and dad agree that Emma’s description of heaven is correct since everything she tells them she sees is described in the Bible as well. However, there are only Scripture references for a few of the descriptions. The majority of them (as well as many of the ones for hell) are not found or discussed in the Bible. They are extra-biblical assumptions, but they are treated and presented as facts to impressionable children.
