After John and Jen decided to respond to a call of duty from the church and the World Health Organization, the Miller family was compelled to sever ties. In order to help the locals, Jen, a civil engineer, and John, a priest, must journey all the way to Kenya in Africa. Mary, 10, and Donny, 5, must stay behind with their grandparents when they leave for the mission. Grace finds it incredibly difficult to accept that she will not see her parents for at least a year and that they will be moving from Kansas to California. In their quest to integrate into their new environment, they face difficulties. When a classmate begins to bully Grace and her friends, they go on the lookout for the offender and launch an investigation. In order to fix this, she enlists the help of her grandma's gang, and she ultimately joins them.

The writer's writing style is very enticing, in my opinion. I had to keep up the pace throughout the book because it had such a strong beginning. Because I couldn't help but wonder if Donny had been found, I thought the book's first plot twist was particularly eye-catching and attention-grabbing. It was quite funny to hear the origin story of the Grandma Gang. It was hilarious how they used detective techniques. Even though they weren't very young, their small team of investigators sounded like a lot of fun to be around. What was intriguing was how much maturity Grace and her friends showed.

I wished the author had included more information on the parents' trip to Africa and how they managed to work, take care of their children back in California, and balance their daily lives. Despite this, I truly enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down. Everything struck me as being on point.

I rate Catherine A. Pepe's, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures 5 out of 5 stars. I cannot deduct a star because the book is deserving. I did not find any typos or grammatical errors while reading through, which made me believe the book was exceptionally well edited.

This book will appeal to older children. It is jam-packed with adventures.
