To start, I believe this book was well crafted did a fantastic job of conveying its central theme to a young age group. Each chapter was succinct and engaging enough to be enjoyed either all at once with slightly older children or chapter by chapter for younger ones. I neither typos or expletives throughout this story, and each section was age appropriate.
I believe that the segment on Hell could be made a bit longer, as to help answer simpler questions a child might have about it. This might include more specific ways to remain righteous outside of obeying God, and it might help to allude to the commandments in this section as well. That way, children could be more at ease with their active choices in life, rather than limiting them to only what their parents ask of them. This will help then think harder about the decisions they make and the effects each action will have.
Though I found this story as a good way to teach about Heaven and Hell, two topics heavily discussed even past childhood, I might hesitate to recommend this particular one to any ethnic children. I worry that they might question why the angels seem to be primarily of one demographic, and why people who look like them might not be present in Heaven. I worry this would shake their faith in both the Lord and themselves, and lead them to begin questioning more aspects of the Church as a result. In general, I do find it important to highlight all ethnicities and features in children’s novels so that they learn to become more open and accepting of others and their individual cultures.
Besides that one aspect, I believe this story is well worth the read. I especially liked how it brought in actual Bible verses in order to help children make the links between the holy book and what they see here in the story. Had the story included both more diversity and a heavier emphasis on Hell and how to avoid it, it might have been a 5 out of 5 stars, however for now I would place it at 4 out of 5.
