Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure
An announcement at the Sedgwick County Zoo, Wichita, Kansas, catches the attention of Mary Grace Miller. Her brother, Donny Miller, is reported to be lost somewhere in the zoo. Donny is a five-year-old boy with Down Syndrome. As Mary Grace joins the search, shortly after locating her parents, many thoughts cloud her mind. Is Donny in danger? Has someone taken him? Fortunately, Mary Grace’s keen eye and sharp mind help the search party to locate Donny. It is a relief to everyone.
Mary is looking forward to her last year at Heartland Elementary and graduation with her friends. However, her parents' plans collide with her desires. She and her brother are to move to California for two years. As she tries to process the myriad of emotions coursing through her, she makes her thoughts known. Unbeknownst to her, there is a mystery in California that requires her keen eye and sharp mind. Can she steel herself and solve it, or will the weight of it crush her? Grab your copy of Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure by Catherine Anna Pepe to find out.
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure is the first volume in the A Grandma Gang Mystery collection. It is a children’s and grandma’s book. Even though I am not a part of the target audience, I found this story enjoyable. Firstly, it has simple and easy-to-understand English. It contains a good range of vocabulary as well. Another aspect I enjoyed was character development. Donny’s enthusiasm is infectious, and all the descriptions of the emotions that the characters portray are well-written. Catherine has also developed the supporting characters sufficiently. This book has many lessons on topics such as family, friendship, and kindness that readers will take home. I like how Catherine displays friendship and reconciliation between Mary and her friends. Young readers will both enjoy and learn a lot from this book.
The dialogue is well-written. Through it, Catherine adds extra layers of depth to her characters. When combined with her storytelling capabilities, both work together to provide a story that is both relatable and entertaining. It is a short read, but it may take young readers a while to complete. I found some of the drawings sprinkled in the book to be refreshing.
The editorial team did a good job, as I only found a few omissions of quotation marks. These, however, do not interrupt the flow of the story in a big way. I did not find anything displeasing about Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure. I recommend it to young readers aged nine to twelve and all grandmas interested in mystery stories. Readers a year or two older and younger may also enjoy this book, depending on their level of comprehension. As I enjoyed this book immensely and believe its readers will benefit from it, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
