The Whaler’s Daughter by Jerry Mikorenda is a novel of a girl named Savannah with dream and passion to hunt whales. She is a twelve-year-old girl who lives with her father in New South Whales. Her mom and two older brothers dies tragically in the sea. Savannah always blamed the orcas for the death of her mother and bothers until she finds the truth behind their deaths. She is told to do cleaning, washing, and cooking like every other woman in her society and stay out of the sea as her father is scared of losing her. Although Savannah is told to do so, it isn’t enough to kill the desperate will of Savannah to kill the orcas.

Eventually, Savannah meets a boy whom she later named Figgie and befriends him. He discovers the Artist in Savannah and paves a path in finding her own skills. He ultimately ends up being a great supporter of Savannah. Their journey to find the truth about themselves, their ancestors and the orcas keeps the story going.

I personally loved this novel. It is a professionally edited novel as I found no errors in it. It is a very attractive book with amazing vocabulary. The meanings of the Australian accents given at the end of the novel is so thoughtful. Those accents made me feel more connected to the novel and felt the story realistic. Despite the trauma she faced by the death of her family members, and the restrictions of the orthodox society that said that she should be confined to home, learn to do all the chores and get married, she manages to find her dream and achieve it. Her strong and brave personality and how she always ran towards her goal sets her as a great example to the kids reading this novel.

I didn’t find any major negative aspects in this novel. As a suggestion, this novel could have had some illustrations in it to give more life to the story. I also felt like the novel is slow paced at few parts of the story.

Overall, I loved this novel and I give it 4 out of 4 stars. I totally recommend this book to children and adults who are looking forward to improving their vocabulary through an inspiring story. This novel would also encourage them to reach their own goal despite the obstacles and prove that there’s nothing impossible.
