Review of Lessons For Kids to Learn
An important aspect of childhood is learning valuable life lessons. Children need to learn about hygiene, nutrition, relationships, personal growth, and safety. These are all lessons found in D.L. Kelly’s Lessons for Kids to Learn.
Kelly’s illustrated children’s book uses brightly colored images to depict the lessons presented. The illustrations are my favorite aspect of the book. The pictures are inviting, easy-to-understand, and use words and dialogue bubbles to further exemplify the author’s ideas. I also enjoyed the large font and colored background used for the words-only pages.
Unfortunately, this children’s book contains a multitude of errors spanning from beginning to end. Even the first illustration contained grammatical errors in the wording. Given that this is a book meant to teach young readers, I was unimpressed regardless of enjoying the illustrations. I also felt that the author neglected to provide examples for younger children to follow. For example, one page says to “set your goals” but neglects to provide examples of what a goal is and how to choose them.
My rating of Lessons for Kids to Learn is 2 out of 4 stars. If the illustrations had been poor, I would have rated this with a single star, but the illustrations are charming and do a good job of visually presenting the lessons for children to comprehend. The author would need to thoroughly edit the book and further expand upon each lesson to merit a four-star rating.
I cannot recommend this book as means of teaching children valuable life lessons. The concepts are present, but the execution was dismal. I also did not feel that the “lessons” were explained enough to be a means of learning. As for a recommended age group, I would say this book is for readers ages 7-10, though the images would be appealing to even younger children.
