Review by Dorcas Ray -- Please Don't Tell Cooper He's A Dog
Please don’t tell Cooper he’s a dog is a children’s book written by Michelle Lander Feinberg and illustrated by Anna Mosca. The books talks about a stray dog named Cooper, that was adopted from a shelter and trained by a family. Cooper is regarded as the sixth born in the family and exhibits behaviours that are uncommon in dogs. Firstly, he does not enjoy activities like chasing sticks and doing tricks. He wants to behave like his siblings and attend ballets, eat from the dining table, use the human toilet. This book is perfectly illustrated. The illustrations are well-drawn and contribute largely to the storytelling. The descriptions of what Cooper does are well portrayed by the illustrations.
The message in the books is one of adventure and taking care of pets. Even though Cooper is a dog, they treat him as one of their own, play with him and dine with him. Children love pets and the story emphasizes in a fun way, how to take care of pets. It is also lovely how the illustrations depicted the roles the entire family shared while taking care of Cooper.
I liked how musical the flow of the book is. It has a rhythm almost similar to that of poetry, that makes it fun to read. I enjoyed the illustrations. Even though I am an adult, I was eager to see what adventure Cooper is up to on the next page. The book also carried the exaggeration that comes with children stories, like how Cooper travelled around the world alone. I feel it will take away any child’s worry over pets that may have run away from home and give them hope that the pets will be back someday. Cooper in the loo was my favourite illustration.
This book will capture the eye and hearts of children below the age of 14. It is easy to understand, therefore, parents will find it interesting to read to their children either for leisure or for educational purposes. I think creative adults will also enjoy this book. It is funny and cute. As an adult, it feeds your inner child adventures.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating. It is well-edited, creatively written and the illustrations are perfectly executed.
