Review by nangel04 -- Thunder and Lightning, They're Not...
Thunder and Lightning, They’re Not So Frightening by JD Schmith is a clever children’s book that honestly describes the phenomenon behind thunder and lightning in a way that small children may easily grasp. Like many children, William is terrified by the loud claps of thunder he hears and intimidated by how the lightning illuminates the entire sky outside his window. This makes him fear the storm will enter his room. After calling out in fear, his father comes into his room and divulges how thunder and lightning come about to ease the child’s terror.
I give this book four out of four stars if for no other reason than the honesty it conveys. Working with children gives me the advantage of understanding how hard it can be at times to be honest with them. The world is a scary place and a child’s innocence is so refreshing that we mistakenly have the desire to feed them pretty lies. While we should not bombard them with all the ugly truths of the world, we need to answer their questions as honestly as we can, and that is what this book does. Schmith takes the science behind lightning and breaks it down into a candid story that young ones will be able to understand, which is not an easy feat.
However, that is not the only reason this book deserves the highest rating. The beautiful graphics also deserve acknowledgement. The pictures are sure to attract a child’s interest. Just as well, any adult reading to the child will be able to appreciate the artwork. What is most fascinating is the way the lifelike representations of William and his father blend so nicely into the less than lifelike scenery.
There is not a single negative thing I can say about this book. The story is told flawlessly and there are no errors. I admire Schmith’s ability to speak to children through her creativity. This is the perfect book to ease the fear of any young one that finds himself trembling under a blanket to hide from a storm. Through this book, a child can learn that thunder and lightning are really nothing to be terrified of.
I would definitely recommend this book to any parent with a young one at home, or to anyone who works with children. Sometimes, as adults, we find ourselves at a loss for words when a child asks what may seem like a simple question. Thankfully, through this book, Schmith has creatively provided an honest answer for one of those questions.
