Review by Joan642 -- The Frights of Fiji by Sunayna Prasad
Do you believe in magic? Do you believe that there is another world were magical beings exist? Or that there are magical beings amongst us? Sunayna Prasad tells an enchanting story of Alyssa’s adventures in the book The Frights of Fiji, book one in the series: Alyssa McCarthy’s magical missions.
“Your life will never be the same again, Alyssa McCarthy, as magic will interfere,” this message began Alyssa’s journey into the magical world. Following the death of her parents, Alyssa became somehow connected with an evil wizard, who is intent on using her to become more powerful. After kidnapping her and her friends, he took them to Fiji Island, were he tried so many attempts on their lives and their only way back home is if the mighty falls. Will they ever return home? Or will he succeed in attaining the power he seeks?
I enjoyed reading this fictitious children’s book a lot. The author started the story quickly, which was good because it grabbed my attention immediately. The author’s writing style is in such a way that the reader could easily picture what was happening in the book. The words used were simple and understandable. Also, the fact that this book is for children was taken into consideration, as there was no use of any abusive language. I really liked the characters in this book, the author did a good job on this part, especially the protagonist, Alyssa, she was just twelve, yet she was very smart and bold but sometimes a bit scared too, which is how it should be.
The plot was well organized and the setting was also well developed, the author was able to create another magical universe that somehow plays with your imagination. The author was very creative in adding technology in the magical island, just like we have iPhones, wizards use wiPhones and like iPods they use wiPods. I felt really relaxed while reading this book. I don’t think I disliked much about this book, it was not lengthy it was just too straight forward. I found just two word(pronouns) omissions but that did not interfere with my reading flow and overall enjoyment of the book. There was also no numbering of the pages in the book and that made it difficult for me to pick up from were I left off.
I would also like to state that this book was professionally edited, so I would cheerfully give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to the general audience, especially children and also for parents that love telling stories to their kids.
