Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is part of the Inca Book Series. In this seventh instalment, Inca and her family find themselves on vacation in India and Southeast Asia. Coming from cold and gloomy London, and being able to bask in the sun on the island of Sri Lanka, in a seaside village named Galle, pleases Inca incredibly.

Inca fancies herself a world-renowned detective and jumps on the opportunity to solve any mystery that is thrown her way. She tells of the friends they make, the trouble her brother Fromage gets into, the lovely weather, the frightening airplane ride and the delicious food they eat. Being French means they love their food and she places emphasis on this fact on numerous occasions throughout her story.

A few days into the holiday, a newspaper article catches their attention; a valuable old antique sword was stolen from a museum in Colombo. Inca’s interest is piqued. The investigation starts on the beach when they meet their new friends.

The story is told in the form of diary entries made by Inca, so the experiences are described from a single perspective.

Kristi’s writing style is sophisticated, yet she uses simplified language to make it easy for her young audience to understand. The book is clearly professionally edited with only a single error to be noted. The illustrations match the story perfectly and are not overwhelming in quantity.

I found the story to be quite captivating, and I believe the intended age group for this book can range anywhere between 2 and 12 years of age. Parents will delight in reading the story to younger children in instalments, and the older children should be able to finish the book in a day or more. There is nothing offensive to be noted other than this is a children’s book and it might not be enjoyed by adults looking for a proper mystery novel to dig into.

The book is packed with positive messages of forgiveness, making friends with species that are different to themselves, having healthy appetites and helping one another.

There is nothing that I disliked about this book. I unreservedly rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
