Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is the seventh stand-alone book in the Inca Cat Detective series.

Inca is a Siberian cat who runs a detective agency. When a priceless, historical sword goes missing while she’s on vacation with her family in Sri-Lanka, Inca just can’t help but get involved. Even though the case isn’t hers, she wants to solve the mystery and get the sword back to the museum it was stolen from. With the help of her family and some animal friends she made along the way, Inca starts investigating.

Serendipity Mystery is aimed at children aged 7 to 12 years old. It’s a children’s book that comes equipped with a fun narrative, colourful illustrations and an impressive vocabulary. The entire book is written as though you’re reading Inca’s diary and as such the story is full of personalised charm. It’s reminiscent of reading a letter from a younger relative telling you all about their day. Personally, I think it can be recommended for children as young as 5 or 6 as well as children as old as 14. Therefore, I recommend this book to kids older than 5. Younger children might enjoy the story as well. I think this book would be a great choice for school discussions or reading groups.

What I liked most about this book is its rich vocabulary. Despite being aimed at children, the book does not go out of its way to oversimplify its vocabulary. I like the idea of children reading this and learning new words in the process.

Something else that requires special mention is the culturally rich content. Inca and her family are on vacation in Sri-Lanka and the author does not skimp out on scenic details. The book is full of incredible descriptions of the places they see and the people and animals they meet.

If I had to pick something I disliked, it would be that I wished the book explored the mystery of the missing sword more. So much attention was paid to their vacation that the addition of the mystery and Inca’s involvement in it seemed a little forced toward the end. I would have liked to see more mention of the case throughout the story instead of the majority of it playing out at the end of the book.

I rate Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi 4 out of 4 stars. There were no mistakes and the book was obviously professionally edited. R.F. Kristi created a fun story with intriguing characters and a colourful journey.
