Get ready for another great adventure with Inca and Company, the spunky band of animal detectives. In this book, Inca the cat and her gang of detectives travel to Sri Lanka. But their vacation is interrupted when an ancient sword is stolen from the museum in Colombo. Inca is the head of the Detective Agency and has her brother, Fromage, and sister, Cara, with her to help her solve cases. Their colleagues also include Charlotte the hamster and Terrance the puppy. Terrance belongs to Solo, a human detective, that has come to investigate the disappearance of the sword. As it happens, Solo and Inca's 'mom' are friends, so the Cat Detective Agency has inside information that will hopefully help them solve the mystery.
As they embark on their precarious case to find the sword, they make friends with a sea turtle named Rani and a baby elephant named Meena and her mommy. Their new friends become interested in the case and want to help solve the mystery. Will they be able to catch those responsible for the sword's disappearance? Will they be able to return the priceless treasure to the museum?
This seventh book in the Inca Cat Detective Series is a charming tale packed with humor, adventure, and travel. The 40-page book was able to stand on its own, and I agree with the author that it will appeal to 7 - 12 year-olds. Adults who have children within the younger age range (from about 7 - 9) will probably need to help with big words, like 'serendipity' or 'unanimous'. There were a few words like this that younger children might not know. I did not see this as a drawback, though. I see it as an opportunity for parents to teach some more advanced vocabulary words.
I so enjoyed the story. I believe children will love all the exotic animals, including monkeys, sea turtles, and elephants, to name a few. The illustrations are beautiful and vibrant, with small details that children are sure to pick up on. The story is at once light-hearted and mysterious. It gives a peek into life on the island of Sri Lanka and some of its landmarks and cultural traditions. I could find nothing that I disliked about the book.
It is with great pleasure that I award Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi a 4 out of 4 stars. The story was engaging and delightful. It is perfect for children who love animals, adventure, and learning about different countries and cultures. The book looked to be professionally edited. I only found three minor errors, including a missing hyphen, one misspelled word, and a capital letter where it should have been a lower case letter. I look forward to reading these books to my children when they get a little older.
