If you have children, don’t miss reading this one together! 3 out of 4 stars from this mom!
I’m Swimming in the Toilet…Please Don’t Flush! written and illustrated by Len Foley is a tale of a frog who is hot and wants to cool off. This little guy heads inside someone’s house finds a toilet with clear blue water, and decides it’s just what he needs to cool off; frogs love water and so the adventure begins.
I’m Swimming in the Toilet…Please Don’t Flush is reminiscent of all the gross and funny moments in the Captain Underpants series written for older children. I’m Swimming in the Toilet… is written for the 3 to 7 -ish crowd who are into all the gross things life has to offer. This is the perfect book for the group who finds bodily functions hilarious and who are learning all about the things that make adults shake their heads and reach for the hand sanitizer. While this is not a chapter book, like Captain Underpants, I’m Swimming in the Toilet… has outlandish and almost cringe-worthy moments, after all the frog is swimming in a toilet.
What to like about this book: The author’s illustrations are simple and corny looking but don’t worry, the kids won’t notice. Each page has plenty to look at as the author has filled many of the pages with lots of little ‘warning signs’ and sidebar dialogue from other characters which are in small print. Don’t skip them, you’re going to have to read them to get the full effect of the story. Each illustration, big or small, adds to the overall appeal of the story, drawing the reader in and making them want to turn the page just to see what’s going to happen next.
Not quite dislikes, but worth a mention: Something that could have been different was the one character, a peanut, who is the lifeguard. Who has a peanut in their bathroom near the toilet? This part of the illustrations was somewhat a miscue in this reader’s opinion. The peanut just didn’t make any sense. A rubber duck, maybe, or a toy dolphin may have been a much more logical choice. Then again, there’s not a lot of logic in a story about a frog swimming in a toilet. If the words of bodily functions bother you, beware. The word pee appears on page three and on a ‘warning sign’ is a shadowy figure who is peeing because, well, it’s okay to pee in a toilet. While these minor things weren’t enough to keep this reader from turning the pages, for some it may be something they want to know before they share this book with the wee ones.
This book is certainly worthy of the 3 out of 4 stars awarded. It’s engaging, funny, relatable and overall an enjoyable read. The little ones are going to love it and will ask for it to be read to them over and over and over. It’s sure to become one of their favorites. Be sure to add it to your list of must-reads.
