Four Funny Potatoes! by Len Foley is a light, funny children's book. One of the funniest things is that it is about three potatoes and a banana. There are some other foods in the mix as well. Benny the banana, however, is continuously called a potato, despite his objections.

These three silly potatoes ignore the facts. The director of the potato song production, which happens to be a bean, insists that Benny “admit” he is a potato.

Despite the group's best efforts, Benny continues through the end of the story declaring that he is, indeed, a banana. The story comes together at the end. Benny leads an inclusive song that allows each food to remain true to its identity.

The story itself is light and a good read for young children. The language and the illustrations would likely appeal most to children under 10.

The illustrations are realistic, encouraging young listeners to learn the names of the food included. There are many rhyming and descriptive words for children that are able to practice those skills.

What I liked the most is the moral of the story - that we can and should all embrace each other’s differences.

What I disliked the most is that death is represented. For it to be such a light, funny children’s story, it seemed slightly out of place to have one of the characters die. The accompanying illustration inspired some questions from my four year old. Some parents may not feel comfortable answering these at story time.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4 Personally, I wouldn't rate it a 4 for including the sensitive subject of death. While it was included as tastefully as possible, I did not appreciate the questions that it brought up from my son. Kids notice everything! It's hard to be sure how they may react to certain things. However, I do believe this book deserves the 3 stars for the rhyming words and great descriptions, as well as the overall story.

All in all, my son and I enjoyed the book. I appreciated that it utilizes some great words and skills while also holding a preschooler's attention.

I am glad you got to try the book out with a toddler age child. Sorry they had questions. Thank you for the review!
