The narrative of Braxton Cosby’s Protostar contains adventure, conspiracy, politics, and love. Braxton emphasizes themes which readers can identify with such as love, affection, friendship, betrayal, and truth. Protostar begins with the birth of Sydney who is taken in by Sarah after a tragic accident. Jump forward to 17 years later and it turns out that the child is believed to be a threat due to her power. Sydney has no clue that she is a "Star Child." She believes that she is a normal human being with an ordinary human life and normal friends.

Things change when William arrives on planet earth with his spaceship. With the help of IMPI, the craft’s computer which is connected to him, he intends to carry out a historic mission which his grandfather failed at. Therefore, he is determined not to fail. Sydney infects him with what humans call love. Consequently, he faces the dilemma of whether to give up his royal status as the son of King Gregorio or to stay with Sydney. Then, the plot thickens as it seems that back at Fabricius, William’s home, there is a plot to overthrow the king. Also, it is revealed that bounty hunters are already on earth waiting to eliminate Prince William and the Star-child.

I did not notice significant mistakes in the book apart from one or two typos. For example, on page 40, it is written “as if it hadn’t even happen” instead of “as if it hadn’t even happened.” The compelling narrative, interesting dialogues, the naivety of the human characters and the amazing plot twists make Protostar an enjoyable read. The character development is great given the author shows us their interactions and how they affect each other. Therefore, a perfect rating of 4 out of 4 stars is justifiable.

Moreover, the author leaves the reader with enough questions unanswered which stimulate the desire to read the next book in The Star Crossed Saga Trilogy. For instance, one time Sydney enters the house and hears her grandmother working in the kitchen, but when she enters the living room she is surprised to find her grandmother there. Later, the author hints to the reader that Sarah could be an alien too. I hope the next books expound on Sarah’s role.

However, the foolhardy story that William gives as an excuse of why he shows up at Sydney’s house got to me. How could all those characters be so easily fooled like that? Anyway, I guess the weaknesses of the characters made the book more interesting.

Protostar is an impressive book that I can gladly recommend to teenage readers since the protagonists are teens. However, any other person who appreciates science fiction that includes stars, other galaxies, the moon, spaceship battles, artificial intelligence, and love might enjoy reading the book.
