Triplicity by J. Mercer is an intriguing story filled with mystery and romance. We start out by reading from three different character’s point of view’s. We are put into a setting of a crowded line of people getting onto a cruise, where these three characters meet each other. They soon become friends, being some of the only teenagers on board. Soon a series of thefts are made, and all three characters are connected to the theft in some way, wrong place, wrong time sort of deal. Soon these three teenagers are trying to find out who the thief is, and they find them in the last place they expected. Well, one of them does.
The first thing I really loved about this book were the characters. They were all so well developed from the start, all with their little quirks. For example, Navy, one of the main characters, has a fear of germs, and constantly has hand sanitizer on her person just in case she touches someone or something. Also, all have their own motives on the cruise, reasons why they act a certain way around everyone, either lying about certain things or putting up a facade. Isaiah, for example, has a ranch he wants to get back to, as it is what he loves, but he has to win a bet with a family member first. Each and every character has their own, unique personality as well, which I really enjoyed because stand alone novels are harder to include these things, and sometimes you can find overlapping personalities. But, I didn’t find any of that in this novel.
Another thing that I really loved about this book was how easy it was to get into. As an avid fantasy reader I find that sometimes fantasy, especially high fantasy, can be a bit more challenging to get into, so it was nice to have a change of pace. Although, the author’s writing was also a big part of it being easy to get into because we are immediately introduced to the characters, and learn about who they are quickly, which kept me intrigued. Especially as all of the character’s perspectives are introduced, and we learn about who they are, what they love, and all of their little quirks.
Last but not least, this book had not failed, at all, as a mystery book. It was so beautifully written, and I regret not picking it up sooner. Now, I’m usually the type of person to immediately guess who the criminal is in mysteries, whether a movie or a book, and I couldn’t guess who this thief was. I didn’t know until the characters knew. All scenes were beautifully written, and I was intrigued the whole time I was reading the book.
Overall I would give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. It was beautifully written, and the characters were so well developed. If I saw this in the bookstore I would definitely buy it, I loved it so much. I would recommend this book for any reader, whether a fan of fantasy or contemporary.
